Bathing Your Hedgehog: A Step-by-Step Guide

1. Setting Up the Bath Area

  • Line the bottom of the sink or bathtub with a non-slip bath mat or towel to prevent your hedgehog from slipping.
  • Fill the tub with warm water, reaching up to the point where your hedgehog’s quills start on their belly. Some hedgehogs enjoy swimming, so a slightly deeper bath can be more comfortable for them. Always provide supervision in the bath.
  • Important: Always check the water temperature! It should be warm enough for a human baby—about 100°F (37.8°C).
  • Gather all necessary supplies nearby. This ensures you won’t need to leave your hedgehog unsupervised.

2. Bathing Your Hedgehog

  • Use baby wash (preferably oatmeal-based) to gently cleanse your hedgehog’s skin. This soothes any irritation while cleaning.
  • For cleaning their quills and feet, use a toothbrush—but make sure to label it! Alternatively, a soft baby brush works just as well.
  • Be thorough when rinsing off all the soap to prevent any residue, which could cause skin irritation.

3. Completing the Bath Routine

  • While your hedgehog is still in the bath, check their feet and legs for any buildup of dirt or debris. Use small nail clippers to trim their tiny nails if needed. Always have septic powder on hand in case of a small injury, as hedgehogs can be wiggly during trims.
  • Once the bath is done, gently dry your hedgehog with a soft towel. Ensure they are completely dry before returning them to their habitat.
  • This is a great time to relax with your hedgehog—maybe even catch up on an episode of your favorite show!
